How to Apply for Admission in Harvard Graduate school of education

Application Requirements for 2012-2013
A complete application to a doctoral or master's program consists of the following:
Online Application Form
2 Short Essay Questions (Ed.L.D. only)
$85 Application Fee - paid via credit card with the online application
Statement of Purpose
Three Letters of Recommendation (these must be submitted through the online application system)
Resume
Official Transcript(s) from each Postsecondary Institution Attended
International Transcript Request Form (77KB pdf) for each institution outside the United States
Standardized Test Score(s):
GRE (mandatory for all applicants)
GMAT (option for Ed.L.D. applicants ONLY who wish to submit in lieu of GRE scores)
TOEFL (if applicable)
For additional information about the application process, please visit our FAQ page. A printable version of the application instructions (398KB pdf) is also available.
Please note that interviews are only a part of the Ed.L.D. admissions process at HGSE, and will take place from March 1-2, 2012; there are no interviews for the Ed.D. or Ed.M. degree programs. Also, several programs have additional application requirements.
It is not possible to apply to multiple degree programs for the same academic year.
You must submit all of your required documents online except for your academic transcripts. We prefer that you collect all of your academic transcripts (each individual transcript should issued by the institution in a sealed envelope that bears an official signature, stamp, or seal) and place them together in one envelope before sending them to the Admissions Office.
When filling out the application, please enter your academic history as early as possible, so that we are able to match incoming transcripts to the schools you have entered. Once you have submitted your application, you will be able to view which transcripts the admissions office has received.
If you have unofficial, electronic copies of your academic transcripts, we encourage you to upload them into the Education section of your online application in order to facilitate online committee review. Please note that all applicants are still required to mail official transcripts to the Admissions Office.
After you enter the contact information for your three recommenders on your application, we will send each of them an email with instructions about logging onto our system. At that time, they will have the opportunity to fill out the Recommendation Form and upload a recommendation letter. Recommendations must be submitted online.

Predictions for 2011 The year of e-learning - a view from India

Always fun to watch as anyone in this time of year trying to guess how the rest of the year to come. Before you post my thoughts on the year of 2011, I believe, worth checking out  my predictions for the year 2010, published at about this time a year ago. That's what I predicted last year:

No.
Prediction
Fulfilled?
Analysis
For India
A.Distribution of training programs.
Yes
Supported by various government agencies, training programs have grown violent color in 2010 and will continue to rise in 2011
Two.Further spread of e-learning in government offices.
Yes
All of the public sector to the military in 2010, put requests for the purchase of e-learning systems - a trend will continue and expand
Three. The introduction of learning management systems in the sector of traditional education.
No
It did not receive such an extension, as I expected (at least not for us and the companies in the state of affairs that I know) - I hope 2011 will be different the second to the best
4.The movement toward online exams in different areas of education and testing in employment, especially in state agencies.
Yes
All India entrance test for engineering majors (AIEEE), J2EE, Final qualification test for engineers (GATE) and other organizations have begun to develop their own plans for the introduction of online testing. The industry looks every day more interesting.
Five.Social and mobile learning will continue to be in its infant stage of development.
Yes
In India, yet there is no significant movement in this direction, despite some interesting projects, such as Kinetic Glue. Tablet PCs may change this situation, if the price drops below 5,000 Indian rupees per share.
For global markets
6.
The explosive spread of electronic books.
No
In fact, I'm not quite sure about this, because we do not deal with too many e-books. But around them there was so much noise, as in the past year (and I myself, still, use a paper book) - try to suggest that a breakthrough is yet to come - maybe this year or next.
7.
Mobile learning at last show rapid growth.
Yes
iPad and Android - these two phenomena are shaped mobile world in 2010. Previously, it was about a new class of devices - tablet, now that they are available to all. We noted a great interest in developing content and applications for these mobile platforms - we expect that this segment will grow rapidly in 2011.
Eight.
Fast content will set the tone.
Yes
It was a no brainer. Customers and developers are moving away from unnecessary multimedia saturation of courses and focus on their effectiveness in a concise chart. This is the right trend and it will evolve.
9.
LMS will remain the main medium of delivery of training courses, the search for alternative media will continue.
Yes
Despite all the negative talk, LMS continued to be the main medium of electronic delivery of training courses in 2010. Community experts in professional training has not found an answer to the question of how to structure learning through social networks. So, the year 2011 will not be in this respect very different from 2010, the (at least in the corporate sector).
Seven of the nine - not bad for an amateur forecaster, is not it! Do you agree with the above analysis?
Now the forecasts for 2011. In addition to these trends there are several developments that I believe will have an impact next year:
    A. growth of online training sessions conducted "live" in India - the need is obvious - a wide geography and the lack of trainers. With the proliferation of 3G networks and the availability of tablet / notebook, I think we can see the beginning of the implementation of synchronous "live" training sessions for key field staff and distance learning this year.
    2. Birth controlled movements and interactive learning - Xbox Kinect and PS3 Move - a great technological innovation and have a great scope for use in training, especially in the segment of K-12. I am sure that very soon, developers will (if not done already), an innovative, exciting and fun course with the use of management techniques with the help of movements. I know that the Nintendo Wii EMS several years ago, but reading the movements without the use of controllers used in the Xbox Kinect and smoothness of the PS3 Move takes experience to another level and should lead to new and interesting developments.
    3. Funds will support the spread of performance - because the department of training and staff development adapts to current needs of users, will gain more weight to performance support tools, such as built-in toolbar, calculators, formed by the broad masses of users of the knowledge base with the ability to search, etc. I believe that this will begin in 2011.
    4. volume of outsourcing will continue to grow - the last economic downturn has forced many companies in the field of e-education and training departments are not used before outsourcing, the structural optimization of the start in order to achieve financial optimization. Due to the fact that outsourcing in the field of e-learning has become commonplace, and the process of developing e-learning courses has reached a certain stage of maturity, this model will spread even faster than before.
    5. Serious games will gain momentum - on the one hand, we observe a departure from the over-saturation of exchange multimedia content and distribution platforms for the rapid development of content. On the other hand, I feel a renewed interest in learning-based games. It is well suited for training new, young employees who are "digital natives jungle." We should see much more development in the field of serious games in 2011, the year.
    6. LMS still remain the main tool of e-learning - I know that I repeat my own last year's prediction is given in the table above. I'm doing this just to tease the doomsday preachers!

That is, I believe, will be the case in 2011. What are your thoughts?

Key Success Factors of Educational Technologies

A team of researchers from the project "Revolution in Education" ( Project RED ), with close ties to the institution of the Individual Training ( One-to-One Institute ), has recently published a report on best practices implementation of educational technologies in schools. From this we can see how technology affect the performance of pupils and reducing costs.
The report contains seven main conclusions. The first is that the positive impact of technology on the educational process is determined primarily by the following nine factors:
1. Technology is integrated into all classes of early intervention;
2. Director and other school leaders allocate appropriate time for training and joint work of teachers in the use of new technologies;
3. Students use technology to share learning,
4. Lessons from the use of embedded technologies are included in the basic training schedule at least once a week or more,
5. In examining the material, at least once a week, conducted an online evaluation of acquired knowledge and skills ;
6. The lower the number of students per computer, the better
7. Virtual travel are held monthly,
8. Students use search engines daily,
9. Director held training sessions on the following topics: how to support teachers of technology, best practices implementation of educational technologies, changes in the educational process, occurring as a result of the introduction of technology.

According to that report, about one percent of schools surveyed have implemented all nine points. School of individual learning, which made it significantly outperformed all other schools, including other schools of individual learning, which have adopted, not all key factors.

"The presence of computers in schools - this original action, which does not guarantee improvements in the learning of materials" - the report says. "Best practice implementation of technology is as important as the technology itself."

The report also noted a positive relationship between the right embedded technology and lower costs. According to these estimates, in the case of the widespread implementation in secondary schools in the U.S. system of education management, saving only copy on a national scale could be worth $ 739 million. On the other hand, the savings comes from reducing redundancy in data storage and software, reducing the cost of tracking and identifying the best educational materials for specific groups of students and reduce the number of expelled students.

The report says that gaining support from influential people in the school, for example, the director, is the key to successful implementation of technology, use of technology in the classroom early intervention improves the results shown in the tests and the level of assimilation of course material, reduces the number of expelled students. The report found that online interaction between students increase their productivity and engagement in the learning process, and the best results were achieved with daily use of educational technology.

Data were obtained from the study of the situation of almost a thousand schools in Washington and various cities in forty-nine states. The report states that during the study examined the state of affairs in specific schools, rather than the situation in the field of education in the region. This approach has allowed researchers to better understand the needs of students, teachers and school administrators.

I think that you're familiar with the names of some of the people running the project "Revolution in Education". This is Leslie Wilson ( Leslie Wilson ), the executive director of the Institute for Individual Training, Thomas Greaves ( Thomas Greaves ) of the Greaves Group, and Jane Hayes ( Hayes Jeanne ) of the Hayes Connection, and others .

If I want to get HTML5, what tools should I use?

Some of the most powerful tools available. Here's something: Adobe Captivate test output in HTML5, Articulate today announced the conclusion of HTML5 for the Storyline , and Allen Technologies is working on HTML5 for the withdrawal of ZebraZapps .

Well, in addition, I propose to draw attention to applications that are not specifically designed to create learning content, for example, Adobe Dreamweaver for a full authoring, or Tumult Hype , and Sencha Animator to create animations . This will not only expand your knowledge and skills, but also can help to broaden horizons in design ... especially if you have previously used the only means of rapid development.

So what can you do with HTML5?

You can create powerful applications. Blah, blah, blah ...

No, let's try one more time.

You can do wonderful things . You can respond to the fact that introduces the student to use plug-ins that understand gestures. You can create a multimedia classroom. You can create applications for drawing, editing images, or sound. You can create a drum kit. You can turn the subway map of New York in a musical instrument. You can create a Quake (note: violence) or Angry Birds . (Warning: Angry Birds contains some built-in Flash, as I understand it, only for sound). And also a whole bunch of other games.

And what you can do all this? I think not. And I certainly can not. But those who possess the technology, they can. Not so long ago we could hardly have done in Flash that is now very easy to do using a fast development. There will be some growing pains, while the tools will be developed.

What is so important HTML5?

When I asked this question in the group, which last month I talked about the development tools HTML5, about half of those present raised their iPad-s. Good answer!

Apple had not let Flash on their iOS-device (iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad), but these devices are very popular so that we can ignore their users. And then there's Adobe announced that it stops the development version of the Flash Player, which is used by all other mobile devices. Even on a desktop and laptop kompyuerah with the Flash plug-in could be in trouble ... and this despite the fact that during the last ten years he gave us the opportunity to receive all the wealth of multimedia over the Web.

But HTML-code, which we obtain at the output of such tools as Lectora and Toolbook , usually so ... static . How do we get all the same opportunities for learning, if we do not use Flash?

So, HTML5 has the most features of Flash, but far more opportunities to play on different mobile devices.

How to choose an best or cheap insurance company

All of us, sooner or later resort to the services of insurance companies: buy a policy of compulsory motor liability insurance, are going abroad for vacation, we want to take care of the preservation of a city apartment or suburban home.

Choose with the company on the territorial principle, as a dry cleaner or pharmacy is not recommended. But if you do decide to apply to the little-known insurer, it is not too lazy to put at least some information about who you are going to entrust their health or property and from whom they would like to receive adequate and full compensation for possible losses in the insurance case.

If the circle of your friends no people professionally involved in this area that could give you expert advice, all the burden of choice (with all its consequences) will fall on you. However, you can rely on the experience of friends who are already customers of insurance companies, and ask whether they are satisfied with the service, whether they had insurance claims, and how quickly they were paid indemnity. If the resolution passed without loss problems, and they received an adequate amount, it already serves as a good recommendation, and we can try to become better acquainted with the insurer.

The name of the well-known companies, which have all "by ear" in itself is a fairly strong argument that it does not evaporate in a year or two steps of your insurance contract. However, we can deal with small companies, only the first is to secure certain guarantees of reliability. Some information about insurance companies is available online for some - will have to go to the office of the insurer.

What we must try to find out about the company before you entrust to it the most expensive?

The important point is the term of the company in the market. Of course, it is better to choose an insurer for a long time - more than five years - providing its services to citizens. Long work testifies to the stability and sustainability of the company.

"Talking about shareholders, should be prepared for the fact that, for example, if an insurance company owned by management, it is quite likely the most unexpected turns in her biography - up to complete the sale. Safer, if a company has several large industrial ownership or financial structure of shoulders where it belongs. This greatly improves the performance of its guarantee of financial obligations, "- said Chief Financial Officer SG" Insurance Capital "Vladimir Soloviev.

Passage of rating procedures - already a big plus for the company, and if it is in the hundreds, or even better - one of the first fifty insurers, the chances of finding in you a new client for it has steadily increased.

See what kinds of insurance company actually spends and how much all their is licensed as actively engaged
in it is the kind of insurance that you need. Whether it is involved in joint promotions or programs with other companies: banks, car showrooms, construction companies and others. Whether the company is developing with the new insurance programs and services.

"Ask anyone from corporate clients ready to show off the company. If she trusted their insurance coverage-known companies and organizations of production, it is hoped that the modest and your interests will be considered by it," - recommends the CEO of SK "Komestra Center" Eugene Mayboroda . It is important that
the company was sufficiently focused on the retail business.

Of course, much can be said about the company financial performance, but an inexperienced person to understand them is almost impossible. Moreover, it is not always important only the absolute values of these figures, it is important to their relationship and interdependence, for example, the ratio of earned premiums and payments, and so on. "In order not to" drown "in the tables and unfamiliar terms, it is enough to make sure that the dynamics of the whole is positive and the company is developing quite actively," - says Chief Financial Officer SG "Mezhregiongarant" Andrey Fomin.

The authorized capital of the company must comply with specifications of Russian legislation. "According to the law on insurance business - says CEO" WITH Zenith "Alexander Kabanov, - from 1 July 2004 the authorized capital of the insurer must be at least 10 million rubles. For property insurance, 20 million rubles. - For life insurance. But just in case it is better not to contact insurers barely got to the "bottom bracket" and choose a reputable company with a capital of 200-300 million rubles. "

It is worth noting the extent to which the insurer is actively present in the region, whether its developed branch network. Participation of companies in state and local programs - is evidence of the manifestation of confidence in it by the authorities, as well as membership in the insurance pools, community and professional associations. The active charitable activities undertaken by the company, not only speaks of the social orientation of its business, but also serves as an indication that the company has sufficient cash.

By making a "virtual" option, be sure to visit the head office of the insurer, see how he resettled how attentive management to our clients whether a sufficient amount of information contained in the booklets and leaflets on the type of insurance you are interested. Having decided to purchase insurance, be sure to discuss with the manager of their problems, do not hesitate to ask questions and seek clarification on any of the insurance contract. Remember that once you put your signature and paid the insurance premium will be too late to change anything.

How to leave the insurer with minimal losses

Change the insurance company profitable after two years of service in it. Terminated the contract with your insurer of life, the client must be prepared for the fact that the company will pay him less than he gave her.

The fact that the early termination of the contract the insurance company pays the client a so-called redemption amount. The size of it will always be less than the funds already made by the client. "The redemption amount is calculated mathematically on the date of termination of the contract of insurance, depending on the period during which the contract and acted in accordance with methodology approved by the State Commission for Regulation of Financial Markets" - explains the actuary department of insurance premiums accounting and actuarial insurance company "Blakitny polіs" Vladislav Makhlai.

On the redemption amount and term of the agreement affects the amount of payments already made. "The size of the redemption amount depends on the period for which the contract is concluded, the duration of its action, in fact, made payments and the sum insured," - says Cards. It also determines the amount of the redemption policy of each individual insurance company. For example, in "Grave Ukraine" surrender value is 95% of what the client has made. And the insurance company "Jupiter", one of the programs of insurance "for the 2nd year actually paid out 50% of the accumulated amount, and then paid 95% in fact, the accumulated amount." The official explanation for this behavior of insurers - that the money the company spent on the teller customer service and payment of taxes on its premiums. A similar practice exists in the banks - if the client wants to withdraw the money early, he will get not 10%, for example, annual, and only 2% or 1.5%.

Two years without the right care

In most companies during the first two years of the contract, the customer is not entitled to the redemption amount (the standard term life insurance contract - 10 years). "According to the rules of our life insurance company, the redemption amount is payable only after two full years of the contract of insurance" - warns Makhlai. A similar term redemption offer to its customers in the companies' Grave Ukraine "and" Oranta-Life. " "In" Grave Ukraine "redemption value already appears in the second year of the term of the policy. And many companies pay the purchase price only after three years ", - says member of the board of the insurance company" Grave Ukraine "Roman Denise. "Until the end of the second year of insurance surrender value is equal to zero" - agrees with him head of underwriting and customer service insurance company "Oranta-Life» Victoria Maps. Also, the redemption amount differs depending on the coating, which is included in a particular insurance policy. "According to the insurance program, which places emphasis on the accumulation, the redemption amount will be higher than under the program, which focuses on the risk part", - says Cards.

For what may be expelled from the customer

The initiator may be a cancellation of the contract and the insurer and the policyholder. Moreover, if the initiator supports the policyholder, he can not explain the reasons for termination. But the reasons for termination of contract by the insurance company must always be grounded. In accordance with Art. 28 of the Law of Ukraine "On Insurance" Insurance Company has the right to terminate the insurance contract unilaterally without the consent of the insured. That is, if the customer complies with all terms of the contract, the insurer can not be out of nowhere to break the contract, otherwise it will end litigation. "In order to terminate the contract required a special reason, such as gross violations of the insured," - says the representative of the Grazer Wechselseitige Versicherung AG in Ukraine, a member of the insurance company life «Grave Ukraine" Roman Denise.

First of all, such grave breaches include the provision of false or incomplete information in the contract. However, the client can "lie" of ignorance, and insurance companies, as a rule, pre-check the weight of lies client. "The insurance company has initiated termination in the case where the client provides deliberately incomplete or false information, which are significant in assessing the risk," - says the head of underwriting and customer service insurance company "Oranta-Life» Victoria Maps.

A significant reason for the termination of the contract is a failure to pay the next premium. But in this case the insurer will not immediately break off relations with the client, and offer a few options out of the situation, including the revision of the contract and changing the size and frequency of payments.

According to Mahli Vladislav, "the grounds for early termination of long-term contract of insurance is the liquidation of the insurer in accordance with the legislation of Ukraine, and the adoption of the judgment of the insurance contract null and void."

Ironically, the reason for termination of the contract may be ... an insurance payout. "Pay the client compensation for disability, the Company may terminate this relationship further by the client, if it considers that a customer in his own new as an unacceptable risk", - said Denis.
